What are LEDs?
LEDs, or light–emitting diodes, are semiconductor devices that produce visible light when an electrical current is passed through them. The heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink, which is why LEDs are cool to the touch.
What makes LEDs different than incandescent and Compact Fluorescent bulbs?
LED is different from traditional incandescent and CFL lighting in many ways. LED lighting is much more efficient, versatile and has a much longer life.
LED lights can come in an array of colors. Commonly, you will see LED lighting in amber, red, green, and blue. A fun fact: LEDs do not come in "white". White or cool light, such as the kind we use for lighting our homes and offices, is achieved by different color LEDs being mixed together or covered with a phosphor material that converts the color of the light. Colored LEDs are widely used as signal lights and indicator lights. You will have seen them in home electronics, such as a power button on a remote control or television set.
LEDs are now are the forefront of general lighting applications. Because LEDs are small, they provide endless design opportunities. Since they outperform traditional light bulbs, and are generally safer to use, LEDs are often a permanent part of many light fixtures.
