George Nelson Bubble Lamps are produced by Herman Miller in partnership with the George Nelson foundation. The instantly recognizable Bubble Lamp design is based on the tenets and the passions of the dynamic and vivacious Modernism movement of the North American continent. This originated in Los Angeles, California, beginning with the post-World War II Case Study Program. George Nelson Bubble Lamps embrace the ethos of the Modernist movement. The myth of the archetypical California lifestyle and outlook was created through the ideals established in this period. George Nelson, Richard Neutra and Charles and Ray Eames, Green and Van Keppel, all contemporaries of the post-war period, shared a vision of making light fixture design easily accessible to the general public. Herman Miller is committed to promoting this bequest from its founders. The company is driven by the basic precepts of ease of accessibility, simplicity in design, superiority in quality and multiplicity of functionality.
Nelson felt that designers must be “aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society and thus cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.” An early environmentalist, Nelson is one of the first designers to try out new communications technology as well as a brilliant writer and teacher. Throughout his life, Nelson's ultimate goal as a designer was “to do much more with much less.”
An architect who acted as Herman Miller’s design director from 1945 to 1972, Nelson once said, “Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair.” After this, he revolutionized lighting design. While outfitting his office, Nelson discovered a silk-covered Swedish lamp that he wanted but found too expensive. After viewing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being "mothballed" netting and self-webbing plastic, he got to thinking. “And then, Whammo!” Inspiration struck, and just like that, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1952). Bubble lamps consist of a skeleton of steel wires wrapped in translucent plastic, creating a smooth, washable film. The lights emit a pleasant glow and can be used anywhere in the world due to their universal voltage.
George Nelson’s bubble lamp designs have become classics among modern light fixtures. Herman Miller is a legendary name in all modern design manufacturing – from lighting to seating and textiles. The George Nelson Bubble Lamp collection (including the Saucer, Cigar, Nelson Bubble and Criss-Cross lamps) was influential in promoting the renaissance of American Design. Herman Miller is instrumental in returning many lost icons of modern design back to the market. The iconic George Nelson Bubble Lamps are among their most beloved.
