Landscape Path Lighting

There are many reasons for the use of landscape path lights along walkways and paths in yards or parks. Path lights are mainly used as a light source for illuminating the way and by that increase the safety at night. Landscape path lights act also as way finding elements and provide visual markers; they show the way and create a welcoming environment for the person walking in the path. There are a few different approaches to path lighting, you may use any of them depending on your style and purpose for the lights and the general design of the landscape. Here are some techniques for landscape path lighting:

The most common technique is the use of low-level path lights along the path; you can place the lights at a distance of about 6-12 feet between the lights along one side of the path or alternate the lights along both sides. The objective is to provide good illumination for safe walking. Low-level path lights have many styles and also include bollards and garden lanterns.

A different technique is to use moon lighting to illuminate paths. This is done from trees or light poles which are placed in the vicinity of the path. You may mount the light fixtures on the branches so that they shine down towards the walking path.

The third technique for landscape path lights is to use lighting beacons, they are very low levels outdoor lighting fixtures that while providing illumination to the immediate surroundings act also as lighted markers. If the path has a wall or similar along it, you can also consider using wall mounted step lights to illuminate the path.
