Bathroom Lighting and Fixtures- Tips and Guidelines for best bathroom lighting and fixtures
Bathroom lighting and fixtures can be as simple or as advanced as you wish, but the principles of good bathroom lighting remain the same and are based on a few fundamental principles:
- Ambient lighting- providing good ambient lighting fixtures in the bathroom is important for general illumination and will also reduce contrast in the vanity area and therefore will help to minimize shadows when looking at the mirror.
- Bathroom vanity lighting fixtures- one of the more challenging areas is the bathroom vanity lighting where it is important to provide good color rendering lamps (so we see ourselves in a natural light) and provide lighting in such a way that will reduce shadows on the face. As we stand in front of the mirror, if the light comes only from above, we then see dark shadows under the eyes and the skin texture is more emphasized. In bathroom vanity lighting good frontal lighting is necessary in order to reduce the shadows and contrast. There are a few ways to achieve this; you may use bathroom vanity lighting fixtures like sconces, one on each side of the mirror, when an appropriate light sconce will provide the diffused light through a non-colored material like frosted glass (in
order to maintain the natural color of the light). You may also create the same effect by hanging bathroom lighting fixtures in the shape of narrow pendants on each side of the mirror for a refreshing and interesting look. You may also be creative and create bathroom vanity lighting by mounting low voltage track from the ceiling above (or stretch low voltage cable lighting) and from it suspend low voltage lighting fixtures or pendants and also put some spots with glass diffusers and direct them toward the mirror where the light will reflect back towards the face and will add to the frontal lighting.
When it comes to bathroom lighting fixtures, many times the shower and bath areas are neglected, pay attention to put good low voltage recessed light in the shower or bath. Low voltage recessed lighting is great for those areas and special wet location trims are available for this purpose.
Bathroom lighting fixtures come in more variety then ever, take some time to select those that will not only look good but will also provide good lighting for your bathroom activities.
