From a laboratory of Tuscany handcrafted lamps made of wood, iron and Murano glass in the 1970s, Terzani Lighting has today become a symbol of creative design and production of lighting objects made of wrought iron, carved wood and Murano glass. The founder – Sergio Terzani’s – dream has come true – and how! Terzani Lighting offers a range of lamps and objects as lighting sculptures, which are no longer just plain accessories or cold technical supports but animated, vital protagonists of living areas, with a completely original and identifiable character. This transformation of Terzani from a laboratory of creative lighting designs to a full-fledged contemporary design manufacturer began in 1985, when Sergio Terzani met Jean François Crochet, who had experience as a creative Parisian designer. The combination of Terzani’s craftsmanship and Crochet’s design sparked the beginning of “Terzani, La luce pensata.” The first product of this new partnership was Antinea, a floor lamp made of wrought iron, pietra serena and Murano glass, which soon became visually synonymous with the phrase “Made in Italy.”
Terzani’s production philosophy combines artisan culture and advanced technology resulting in a creative invention of the first sketch and culminating in an extremely accurate search of the perfect detail through the use of the right materials and technologies. Today, the third generation of management is pushing the brand’s identity further, combining the company’s heritage with 21st-century technology by integrating new, sophisticated techniques with traditional hand welding performed by Italian master craftsmen. Renowned new designers such as Bruno Rainaldi, Prospero Rasulo, Giulio Iacchetti and Barlas Baylar are involved in this process. Terzani, “la luce pensata,” has always represented both a small family workshop and an internationally renowned brand, traditional knowledge as well as technological innovation, a seductive look back and a soft step forward into the future.
The glass design pieces from Terzani lighting are a typical example of the traditional married with modern technology to result in a beautiful fusion of both worlds – these pieces maintain the tradition of hand blowing, but are then treated with sophisticated vacuum metallization technology. Similarly, the new three dimensional laser cutting allows the creation of new forms is still integrated with traditional hand welding performed by Italian masters. This fusion represents a choice to preserve the culture and knowledge of an artisan aristocracy, which is the only way to guarantee the highest standard of form and function. Inspiration for Terzani lighting pieces can spring from anywhere: a flower, a jewel, passion, a woman’s name, or the human body. Therefore Terzani has added a new motto: “tutto e’ luce.”
